7 pm, Sunday, June 23rd, at the Stephen F. Shaar Community Centre, 394 Main Road, Hudson
This month’s HHS presenter is Jim Stone.
Jim, a retired Foreign Service officer and amateur historian, will talk to us about Grand Chief Pierre Louis Constant Pinesi (1768–1834) and the Algonquin peoples of the Ottawa area. Although not Indigenous, Jim compiled his information from published and archival sources. He consulted with the Pikwakanagan First Nation, who, along with the Kitigan Zibi First Nation, are the descendants of the Lake of Two Mountains Algonquin. Jim describes the hardships the Algonquin faced, including European diseases and Iroquois expansion, and their eventual return to the Ottawa Valley after the 1701 Grand Peace. Jim will highlight Chief Pinesi’s efforts to protect his people’s land rights through petitions to the governments of Upper and Lower Canada, though these were ignored. He will also discuss the impact of settlers, logging, and the Industrializîation of the Ottawa on the Algonquin way of life. Chief Pinesi and his wife have a strong connection to the Lake of Two Mountains, and Jim will lead us through the fascinating journey of Pinesi and his people
