19 Feb After the Storm: Essential safety measures
Due to the significant snow accumulation in recent days, the Hudson Fire Department would like to remind you of some essential steps to ensure your safety and help emergency responders reach you quickly in case of need.
Clear Access Points
Ensure that your driveways, sidewalks, building entrances, and basement windows are cleared of snow. Unobstructed access enables firefighters to respond quickly during an emergency.
Monitor Snow Accumulation on Roofs
Heavy snow buildup on roofs can pose a risk of collapse. Stay alert for signs of danger, such as cracks, unusual sounds, or water leaks. To prevent accidents or falls, hire a professional to clear your roof at least once a year, or whenever snow accumulation exceeds 60 cm (24 inches).
Ensure Proper Heating System Safety
If you’re using a fuel-burning furnace or heater, make sure chimneys and vents are clear to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. For optimal protection, install a carbon monoxide detector.
Keep Air Vents and Gas Meters Clear
If your home uses gas, ensure your gas meter is free of snow, and clear the vents of your furnace to prevent blockages.
Clear the exhaust vents and air intakes of your water heater and dryer manually to avoid damaging them. Make sure chimneys and vents stay clear to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
