National Drowning Prevention Week

Though drowning deaths have been declining since the 1990s, there are still far too many preventable deaths by drowning that occur each year.

Staying prepared and informed about water safety is of huge importance, for both young and old.

Here are some prevention tips from the Lifesaving Society:

  • Designate an adult to supervise children and make sure young children are within arm’s reach.
  • Access to your pool must be controlled on all four sides.
  • Enter the water feet first.
  • Wait until you’ve finished your aquatic activities before consuming alcohol.
  • Always wear your flotation vest: It does nothing to help you if it stays on the bottom of your boat.
  • Learn CPR

In addition to these tips, the Québec government wishes to emphasize its pool safety regulations, which will apply to all pool owners in September 2025. These regulations ensure that pool safety is maximized throughout the province, and drowning deaths are avoided.

Urban Planning inspectors have begun conducting inspections of the residential pools in the municipal area. The goal is to help pool owners identify any non-compliance with their installations before the September 30, 2025 deadline.
