l’Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge : Reopening of a third lane planned for Monday, January 15th

Montreal, January 11, 2024 – The Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility informs the public that the repair work on a damaged deck section is complete, and a third traffic lane will reopen on Monday, January 15, weather permitting. Once reopened, two lanes will be available towards Vaudreuil-Dorion and one towards Montreal at all times.

Traffic Management
For road safety reasons, dynamic traffic management cannot be implemented. The space required for ongoing beam reinforcement work does not allow for an increase in lane width, a prerequisite for dynamic management implementation.

With the planned reconfiguration of traffic upon opening a third lane, adjustments to the safety barrier and marking work will be necessary. Disruptions are expected on the bridge at night to implement this new configuration as follows:

• Thursday, January 11, night (mobile work, traffic will remain possible);
• From Sunday, January 14, at 8:00 PM, to Monday, January 15, at 5:00 AM (complete closure).

These works may be postponed or extended due to operational constraints or unfavourable weather conditions.

Mitigation Measures
In the coming months, the Ministry will continue beam reinforcement work to reopen additional traffic lanes on the bridge. Until another lane is opened, enhancements to the train service and the use of the shoulder by buses on Highway 40 westbound will remain in place. Since Monday, January 8, additional stops at Hudson station on the Vaudreuil-Hudson line have been made available.

The existing free services on specific train and bus routes will remain in place for January. Public transit users will need a valid fare to use train and bus services starting in February. Regarding this, advantageous fare discounts will be confirmed shortly.

The suspension of toll fees for Highway 30 will be maintained in the eastbound direction between 5:30 AM and 9:30 AM, Monday to Friday, starting from the reopening of a third lane on the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge.

Highlights
• The work carried out since last December on a damaged deck section allows for the reopening of a third traffic lane on the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge.

o Due to more significant congestion towards Vaudreuil-Dorion in recent weeks, the third traffic lane will be available in that direction at all times.
o Traffic light synchronization on Highway 20 will be adjusted to provide an alternative solution for road users heading towards Montreal.
o During significant snowfall, only one lane per direction might be available for the time needed to carry out snow removal operations and ensure safe traffic on the bridge.

• When possible, it is recommended for workers and employers to prioritize telecommuting and public transportation.
