Food waste and green residues

3 months already! Here are some statistics that chart our progress over the first 3 months of the program.

• This program aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
• According to the objectives adopted by the government in the Quebec Residual Materials Management Policy, it will be prohibited to send organic matter to landfill by 2020.
• The objective is to recover 60% of the organic matter generated, all sectors of origin combined (residential sector and sector of industries, businesses and institutions).  Organic materials include food waste and green waste (garden waste).

Bags for the bins (in French only)

• You do not need to line your bins with paper bags; you can place the materials directly into both the kitchen bin and the large 45 L bin.
• However, you can use cellulose-lined paper bags, ordinary paper bags, newsprint (including circulars with unwaxed paper) or dirty cardboard. Plastic bags are not accepted, not even if they are biodegradable or compostable.
• You can purchase paper bags at grocery stores and hardware stores.
