SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes of World Cinema - Black Orpheus
DESCRIPTION:Behind the Scenes of World Cinema. Presented by CLINT WARD\nWe all enjoy wonderful entertaining\, and thought-provoking movies.  We rarely give thought to the history or to all the brilliant ideas\, insights and artistry that contribute to a polished final product. \nThis exciting series at the Hub will help us understand and appreciate movies of all genres\, be they comedies\, dramas\, documentaries\, classics or musicals.  Or we could delve into all the exacting work that goes on behind the scenes. \nOn the first Saturday of each month\, Clint will either show us a full movie or will guide us through insightful films or video clips and interviews where behind the scenes work will be explored.   It will be a two hour adventure in film. \nFor June’s event\, the film will be “Black Orpheus”\, the film that introduced the world to the wonderful Brazilian music\, Bossa Nova.    This is in coordination with the theme of this year’s Hudson Creative Hub’s gala on May 25th\, which celebrates 60 years of Bossa Nova. \nBlack Orpheus is a 1959 romantic tragedy film directed by French filmmaker Marcel Camus.  It is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in a contemporary favela in Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval. \nThe film won the 1959 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival\, the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film\, and the 1960 Golden Globe award for best Foreign Film. \nDate:  Saturday\, June 1st 2024\nTime:  2 pm\nTickets:  At the door\, free for Hub members.  A donation is requested for non-members

SUMMARY:Chief Pinesi and the Algonquins of the Lake of Two Mountains and the Ottawa River Watershed
DESCRIPTION:7 pm\, Sunday\, June 23rd\, at the Stephen F. Shaar Community Centre\, 394 Main Road\, Hudson \nThis month’s HHS presenter is Jim Stone. \nJim\, a retired Foreign Service officer and amateur historian\, will talk to us about Grand Chief Pierre Louis Constant Pinesi (1768–1834) and the Algonquin peoples of the Ottawa area. Although not Indigenous\, Jim compiled his information from published and archival sources. He consulted with the Pikwakanagan First Nation\, who\, along with the Kitigan Zibi First Nation\, are the descendants of the Lake of Two Mountains Algonquin. Jim describes the hardships the Algonquin faced\, including European diseases and Iroquois expansion\, and their eventual return to the Ottawa Valley after the 1701 Grand Peace. Jim will highlight Chief Pinesi’s efforts to protect his people’s land rights through petitions to the governments of Upper and Lower Canada\, though these were ignored. He will also discuss the impact of settlers\, logging\, and the Industrializîation of the Ottawa on the Algonquin way of life. Chief Pinesi and his wife have a strong connection to the Lake of Two Mountains\, and Jim will lead us through the fascinating journey of Pinesi and his people \nFree for members of the HHS\, $10 for non members.

Art Exhibition: Original works for display and for sale from Audrey Smith\, Sophie Brouillet\, Mona Turner\, Joanna Olson\, Allison Smith\, Nancy Farnum\, Judith Harvey\, and Andrea M. Coda di San Grato. \n2. Vintage and Antique Home Décor: A curated collection of small furniture\, tableware\, barware\, and lighting will be displayed in conjunction with the art pieces. These items will be provided by Hudson business Le Corbeau et le Renard and will be available for sale at the event. \n3. New and Upcycled Décor Accessories: A selection of table linens\, pillows\, and other textile pieces created by Fabrique de Verger will be available for purchase. \n4. Collaborative Displays: The exhibition will showcase the art and supporting home décor pieces through a series of styled vignettes that help attendees envision the items in their homes. \n5. Community Outreach: Representatives from the Creek 53 Conservancy Trust will be on-site and available to explain their mission to “preserve the biodiversity and ecosystem integrity of an area of ecological importance and natural beauty within the Hudson escarpment and the Creek 53 watershed.” \n6. Refreshments: The Verger de Hudson Bio will be offering a seasonal picnic menu\, refined snacks\, as well as local micro-brewery and sparkling ciders for purchase during the event. \nArt de Vivre: Living Artfully\, Embracing Life is poised to be a must-see event for anyone who appreciates art\, design aesthetics\, and sustainable living.
